Biographical/Historical Note
Joseph Delaney (1904-1991) was an African American painter in New York, NY. Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, he joined his older brother, Beauford Delaney, in New York in 1930 and began studying at the Art Students League. He lived and worked in New York until 1986 when he returned to Knoxville to become the artist-in-residence at the University of Tennessee.
