Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Wednesday, July 10, 1872, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Wednesday, July 10, 1872- Mr Greeley was nominated today by the Democratic Convention at Baltimore for president. I can conceive of nothing more inconsistent and absurd. A cannon was brought up on the hill and a hundred guns fired by the very men who during the war would have murdered him if they had dared. I took Lory Stoddard and Marian out riding by Steep Rocks and Flat-bush. It was intolerably hot going out but pleasant coming back. I wrote to Mr. Dorman today telling him I would want to send him his picture about Sept. 1.
