Monday, August 25, 1873- My father and I took the 2.40 train and went out to Shandaken Centre to see Whittredge. I found him much better so that he rather regretted having written so despondingly. It was very warm when we left here but the wind changed in the afternoon and at night I was kept awake by the cold my bed not having sufficient cover. We remained at Laments until Sunday when we returned by the 3.40 train. We had a walk up towards Deep Hollow. It was a breezy cool day more like October than August and Whittredge enjoyed it exceedingly and seemed much pleased that I had come out to see him. My father and I arrived home at 5.30. We got out at the junction and walked home. Saturday I wrote to Mr. Moore asking him to send me some money. To Eastman Johnson and to A. P. Bacon of the Fall River line in relation to an overcharge of two dollars of the clerk of the Providence on my fare to Nantucket which he refused to correct. This morning I wrote to Church telling him we would come and visit them if they were ready to have us do so. We will go there for a couple of weeks if they want us to and then I shall probably join Whittredge who expects to spend the autumn in the vicinity of Pine Hill. He is going to explore about there as soon as he is well enough and will let me know as soon as he is settled. My father and mother went to Shandaken Centre today by the 2.40 train to get blackberries. They expect to return tomorrow. It is cool and fall like with the indications of a storm by tomorrow. Flocks of black birds have been hovering about the hill for several days.
