Thursday, Aug. 7, 1873- I went down town yesterday and looked at an old Franklin belonging to Bacharach Weirs Brother wanted to buy mine last winter and today I wrote to his father in law Mr. Henderson by the Evening Post (not knowing his address) that he could buy it for fifteen dollars. Bowyer had a letter from his mother today saying she and Calvert would come home tomorrow evening. I leave tomorrow by the noon train for Nantucket. I don't know how long I will stay. If I find something to paint I will remain a while if not and I do not hear from Gifford I will probably not be gone more than a week. It is so charming here now that I should never think of finding a pleasanter spot. Gertrude will meet me Saturday either at Middlebury or Woods Hole and I shall be very glad to see her. She has been gone for four weeks last Tuesday and it seems a long time. I had a confidential talk with Maurice this evening about his drinking. He invited it I am glad to see that I am getting his confidence and hope I can do him good.
