Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, Jan. 5, 1873, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Sunday, Jan. 5, 1873- We went home December 24th. Gertrude, Sara, Downing and I returned yesterday. I never had a more enjoyable visit home. The day after we reached there we had a magnificent snow storm with the mercury at zero and when that was over a perfect winter landscape under eighteen inches of snow. Downing and I went out into the mountains on the rail road as far as Shandaken Centre. One day my father took us to Rosendale and I had several nice walks although the snow was too deep to get about out of the paths. Attended a lecture of Anna Dickinson in Kingston and was much disappointed. Nett Sterling came up and gave a fine concert in Washington Hall and she and Miss Bragg staid with us and came home with us. Gussie and Joe were there all through our visit and Girard a part of the time. I am full of winter pictures and the city is tame compared with the magnificence of the snowy country. Received a notice last night to attend a meeting of the nominating committee at the Century. To my great surprise it was to nominate a Treasurer in place of Mr. Priestly who died suddently of Pneumonia on New Year Morning while I was about. So they go one after another to our bewilderment and sorrow. I saw Stedman at the club for the first time since my illness and he seemed very glad to see me. Joe Tomkins was there with Vaux. Today I have finished a letter to Laux and Baker in Rome begun at home, in which I send each some flowers from Kensetts coffin. A storm of sleet is raging and the streets are horrible.
