Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Friday, July 18, 1873, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Friday, July 18, 1873- Mary received a letter from Downing. He and Loring Brace had made the journey from Long Lake to Placid Lake about 50 miles leaving their boat at the Lower Saranac. It has been cloudy all day and towards evening began to rain so that there is a prospect of a good rain fall This evening in coming up to my room in the dark I ran into the door which was shut, striking my nose, bruising it severely and knocking the skin off my hands.
