Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Monday, February 2, 1874, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Monday, Feb 2, 1874- The weather is intensly cold. Girard, Mrs Sawyer, Alice, and Uncle Charles and I came down on the Wallkill Valley. The mercury reached 3 degrees below zero on our hill and 8 degrees below down in the town. It began to snow just as we arrived in New York and before night it settled into a wild storm. I had promised to take Alice to Dr. Hollands reception so I got a carriage and went over to Mr. Stickneys in 12th street for her. We had a delightful evening and I saw all our old friends. I invited Annie and Katie Holland to come and lunch with Alice in my room on Friday and Alice is to invite Bella Brush. I would like to give the young people a pleasant time and they enjoy such things so much. Wrote to Gertrude before I went to bed.
