Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, July 4, 1874, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Saturday, July 4, 1874- We went on a pic nic to the same place we went last year, at the 5th Binnewater. I drove the new brick board with Gertrude & Sade and Pa with my Mother, Mary with Lory & Marion. The rest of the party went by rail road. It was a charming day and we had a very pleasant time until about 3 o'clock when it began to rain and continued until 5 when we started for home. On the way a very heavy storm overtook us but we fortunately got into a barn and had complete shelter. My father who went by [Greenkill?] was caught in the storm and they were drenched to the skin. When we got home we found Lieut. Loeske here, so the house is full of people.
