Joe and I came down yesterday. Maurice drove us over on the ice which is more than two feet thick. Sam Coy Kendall came down in the drawing room car with us and we talked together all the way down. I got him to subscribe to the fellowship fund of the Academy. In the evening attended the usual Council Meeting and wrote to Gertrude afterwards. It is still intensely cold. The mercury marked on our hill Monday morning at 8 oclock zero and at Coy Kendalls 7 below so that the cold is greater below the hill by 6 or 7 degrees a fact I noted last winter. Did not brave my studio until this evening when I called on the Grays and found them all at home. Wrote to Gertrude.
