Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Wednesday, December 6, 1876, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Booth sat to me today for Hamlet and I have commenced to paint him seated in the grave yard scene selecting an attitude I noticed when I last saw him in Hamlet. I was attacked with one of my severe headaches but worked until 3 oclock he sitting most patiently. After he was gone I had hot water brought and sat with my feet in it until nearly six. I also drank a half bottle of champagne which always relieves me and was able to take my dinner with Mary & Calvert who came in. We three went to see Booth in Richard II. There was a very thin house.
