Saturday attended the meeting of the Committee of Selection for the Centennial called by the Director General for organization at 625 Broadway. Mr. Goshorn was there, Mr. Robinson from Boston, Mr. Waugh & Mr. Roberts from Philadelphia and Mr. Huntington and myself from N.Y. Mr. Goshorn declared that the American Art Department would be left entirely in our hands as to its character. That we were not to be asked to select the foreign Art viewed in this Country. That we go to Boston first to select the pictures on Monday March 27. That it is advisable that we be there the Saturday evening previous to organize and decide on our plan. Select the pictures in N.Y. on the 30th and go to Philadelphia the first week in April to conclude our work. Mr. Huntington was made chairman, Hicks Secretary and Mr Roberts Treasurer. Our expenses are to be paid. Was not very strongly impressed with the force of the Philadelphia men. The Boston man struck me more favorably. However I ought not to form a judgment at all on so slight an acquaintance. Got back to my studio about 3. Some ladies came, one of them a niece of Mrs. Wilson to see her picture. They seemed very much pleased with it. Showed them all my pictures. As soon as they went I hurried up to the 4 oclock train for home. Got home after dark with little detention to the ferry boat from ice. Walked up home. Very muddy. Sunday was a warm delightful day more like May than February but so muddy that I could not take a walk. In the evening walked up to Kingston to hear Mr. Vandiver preach on "Esther" she being the all absorbing topic there just now. Started for the 9.44 train this morning in a little tug. Got fast in the ice and missed the train. The Norwich had to come out and liberate us. Came down in the 12.44 train reaching here at 4.30. Went to the Council meeting. Has rained all day. Gifford dined with me. Wrote Gertrude a short not and sent here a check to pay Vaux's tax.
