Stopped in at Fred Nortons on my way to the Academy on Monday night. In the Council we reduced Richards salary from $1800 to $1000 and the janitors from $800 to $600. I introduced a resolution for the appointment of a committee to amend the Academy Constitution. I was appointed chairman with Greene, Ward, Lambdin and Shattuck. We have given the opposition three of the committee which I think ought to be a garanty of our desire to give them a fair chance. Last night I attend Bayard Taylors 51st birth day party. Bret Hart, Mr & Mrs Stoddard, Mrs Stedman, Mr. Moore, Haven Putnam and McDonough were there and also Gifford and Whitelaw Reid. We had a very pleasant time and Gifford and I remained until 12 o'clock. I had a delightful letter from Booth on Monday from Baltimore in excellent spirits and giving an account of full and enthusiastic houses. Today I called on Colman whom I have not been to see since he returned. Talked Academy affairs with him and find he thinks much as I do. Perry had been there. I met him in front of the Fifth Avenue hotel and knew he was stirring up something. I understand now it is some new fangled idea connected with the schools. He is an impossible nuisance. I think a curse fell on the Academy when he was made a member.
