Sunday May 7, 1876
Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, May 7, 1876, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
There was an explosion of a magazine of giant powder over at the New Bergen Tunnel last night and Vaux and I went over to see the effects of it. The windows of all the houses in the region were broken but there was nothing of the destruction I expected to see. It was very warm and we actually suffered with the heat. The mercury has been at 85 degrees and vegetation fairly bursts out. We went to Taylors in the evening and he read us his Centennial poem which is really fine.
