Jervis McEntee Diaries

Sunday October 1, 1876

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, October 1, 1876, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Attended the funeral of John Vanderlyn Jr. in company with my father. He died on Thursday I think and was 71 years old, older than I thought. He lived with his sisters in an old fashioned house cor of Fair & John Sts (I think). In the room where I was were sketches by the elder Vanderlyn his Uncle. One I think must have been the original design for his warriors, in Sepia. We went to cemetery. He was buried by the Masons man the elder Vanderlyn. It was a beautiful October day. I was never much attracted to him and he had little talent as a painter and no genius.
