My father returned Tuesday. I received a letter from Mr. Alfred Booth yesterday from Philadelphia and answered it last evening. Have been spending my time doing some repairs about the house & barn, yesterday fixed the drain which is a frequently recurring nuisance. Received a nice letter from Jim Warren today apologizing for his book keepers letter to me, and also a letter from Mr. Marquand inviting me very cordially to come to his house in Newport to visit him from Thursday until Monday. The letter had been sent to New York and forwarded to me. Gertrude had a note from Mrs. Church on Tuesday inviting us up there for a visit and to meet Escosura the Spanish artist who is to be there some time this week. She wrote her that on account of Lauras illness she could not leave or at least for not more than a day and if she would let us know when Escosura would be there I and perhaps both of us would come up for a day. Laura continues very ill but Sara thinks she is a little better today. Maurice torments us in the midst of all our other anxieties and I do not know what to do with him. Gertrude and I called on Mr. Lindsley this evening, and his sister Mrs. Catlin who is making him a visit.
