Jervis McEntee Diaries

Friday April 20, 1877

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Friday, April 20, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Meeting of Academicians to amend the Constitution. Voted to add two to the Hanging Committee making it five all of whom may be selected from the Council but two are to be selected by the Council. Voted also that each Academician is entitled to six feet of the line. The Hanging Committee was courteously requested to rearrange the pictures this year but declined on the ground that they had made no mistakes, thusly in my opinion losing an opportunity to release themselves from a load of odium that they will never recover from. The whole proceedings were entirely unsatisfactory to me and weaken my attachment to the institution. Whittredge made a capital address and showed great wisdom in his ideas of the government of the Academy.
