Have just finished the Life and letters of McAuley (or rather Macauley) by his nephew Trevelyan in which I have been greatly interested. What an honest, just man, most tender in his family relations, liberal with his money, all of which he earned himself and with a warm susceptible heart which marks him in my estimation one of the best and greatest of men. Never courting popularity and yet winning the confidence and esteem of the nation by his simple integrity of character and his fearlessness in defending his convictions. Any country is blessed which has such men in its councils. They began to cut the corn today.
