Booth came yesterday but could not sit. He likes to look at the little pictures every time he comes and seems much pleased with them. I showed the Richelieu & the Hamlet to Beard. He thought the effect of Hamlet very "pretty" but said the head was terribly out of drawing, and tried to show me but I was not convinced. Booth came today and sat from 11 to 4. I had a hard time on the Richelieu but after all I got on and improved it. Is coming again tomorrow. Showed them to Whittredge who spoke very encouragingly. He has an opinion from his father in law Judge Firt on the question whether the recent establishment of paying schools at the Academy does not make it liable to taxation. He is finally of the opinion that it does and I have not the slightest doubt that he is right. Gertrude and I spent last evening and this in trimming the Vanderlyn engravings and trying to make them presentable for auction.
