Andrew H. Green the ex-controller of the city and a Mr. Carroll of Troy called on me on Tuesday. Mr. Green seemed interested in my pictures but Mr. Carroll who has a collection of pictures was very critical and I think if he had staid long enough would have taught me how to paint. In the evening we had a little entertainment to which we invited about twenty people only about half of whom came all of our own family. Thursday attended a meeting of the Century trustees. Joseph Besant the steward being dangerously ill the monthly meeting was postponed a week. I went up this evening to inquire about him and learned that he died this afternoon at 5 o'clock. He had pneumonia in both lungs. He was a faithful servant of the club for at least 17 years and will be a great loss. His funeral will take place at the club on Sunday at 1.30. Julia Dillon came and spent the evening. Her pictures at the sale of the Womens but work brought nothing and I think she felt very badly about it. Mr. Weeks brought a Mr. Holt to look at one of my pictures this morning which he proposes to buy as present to Mr. De Forest. He is to let me know about it on Monday. I am painting an Indian Summer picture based on a Kaatskill brook study. Size 30x36 which I hope will be interesting. I have been at work on it four days and have advanced it considerably.
