Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Wednesday, November 14, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Yesterdays Tribune contained the announcement of the death of Henry Peters Gray on Sunday night. I saw him at the club on the Saturday evening a week previous and spoke to him. He seemed as well as usual and I was shocked to hear of his death. His funeral occurred on Tuesday at 4. P.M. I think I would have gone down had I known it in time. [Newspaper funeral notice attached.] I think his death must be a relief to his family for Mrs. Gray told us last winter of the trouble he caused them. His mind was much affected and from being a kind and tender husband and father he had grown suspicious and tyrannical.
