Mary Gifford came down today to make us a short visit. This evening Mr. N. H. Wells of Wyalusing Pa called with his brother-in-law Mr. Jenkins Sloat of Closter N.J. Mr. Wells was a passenger by the Brig Vanela which brought the yellow fever to Rondout in 1843 and he was sick with the fever at the Mansion House when we lived there. He had seen an account of my fathers & mothers Golden Wedding this summer and was induced to come and see them to express his gratitude for their care of him a stranger. He seemed a man of sterling character and was most grateful in his expressions to my father & mother. It was delightful to see this feeling manifested and the visit was a great pleasure to all parties. He thought Pa charged him too little for the trouble and he wanted to pay him more saying he was better able to pay now owing to the provision that others had made for his temporal wants. He is evidently a rich man and his gratitude did him great honor. He had also been to see Dr. Eltrige who attended him. They spent the evening and went away showing the gratification his visit had been and saying we would hear from him again.
