Jervis McEntee Diaries

Sunday September 23, 1877

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, September 23, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

The usual Equinostial storm so far as entirely failed. The drought is most oppressive. I have tried to paint but cannot. I am unhappy because I am not at work and I dont know where to go. Much as I dread going alone I must go somewhere soon, just as soon as the autumn color comes on. Joe Tomkins left yesterday. I do not think he was able to go but he got discontented here and I think the depression here drove him away. We are not happy in our family and I regret it greatly. [addendum in other handwriting: "Note: Being a diabetic for twenty years--my father was one. I cannot but think Uncle Jervis was one. He has all the ear marks. His fine sense of exercising no doubt saved him. Girard L McEntee Colonel [?], Ret'd"]
