Jervis McEntee Diaries

Saturday September 8, 1877

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Saturday, September 8, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Sara arrived home from Hillsboro with Joe who is looking badly. He expects to stay some time but I fear will be homesick and discontented here. Attended the meeting of the Literary Club at Mr. Lindsleys. Dr. Douglass read the essay on the "relation of mind to matter". The discussion led off to the consideration of the immortality of the soul and all got into deeper water than they were accustomed to. Blauvelt headed them all off by allusions to what they might expect to confront in modern thought if they went on that tack. Daniel McEntee's son Arthur came this evening but as the house is full he went over to Girards.
