Visited Marshall O. Roberts gallery on Thursday. He went about with me and was very polite. Has many interesting pictures but in some cases has spent his money rather wildly as for instance giving Tilton ten thousand dollars. He had nothing of mine and as he had told me of this and that artist borrowing money of him and [?] him I determined to make no allusion to myself. I might have done so for he asked me about my picture just finished, but I did not even ask him to come to see it. Such people take the alarm easily and I do not wonder. Last night I called on the Thurbers. Saw Mrs. T. She said they wanted pictures for their parlor and were coming to the studio building soon. I told her of my picutre and she said they would come and see it. I also called at Fred Nortons to congratulate Julia on the favorable notice of her work by Clarence Cook in the Tribune. Mr & Mrs. Wheeler called a few evenings ago and proposed to trade a horse for a picture which I have done. Gertude went home Wednesday 17 with Nannie McEntee. Mr. Vose of Providence bought a little picture of me and I sent it to him C. O. D. (today) as he desired.
