Awoke with a headache. Went out for a walk but felt very badly. Sent word up to Booth not to come as I thought I would not be able to do any thing. Pinchot called in a great fever. Had been attacked in an editorial in the World as one of the Art Committee of the Paris Exposition. Had a letter from Parke Godwin to Hurlbut and wanted me to write something. I advised him to pay no attention to it but he thought he would go and see Hurlbut so I wrote a note in his defense as I think him an excellent man for the place and the attack entirely unjust. Just as he left Mary Gifford came with Mrs Van Jugen and Edith Gifford. After they went Booth came to say he was glad to be let off as he had been busy. Meanwhile my head aching very hard I sent out and got a half bottle of champagne which I drank and immediately began to feel better and tonight am all right again. Pinchot came back. Did not see Hurlbut but saw one of the other editors who recommended him to come there tonight at 11 when Hurlbut would be there and he thought he would make it all right. I doubt if he will however. They never do.
