Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, July 7, 1878, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
James Cook who was with S[?] a number of years was buried today. He was one of the assistant engineers of the Fire Department and the Firemen buried him. I heard the band playing solem music as they went to the grave this summer day and now they are returning playing light and joyous music. He leaves a wife and seven children. There is something inexpressibly touching in this music wailing over the dead in this mid summer day.
