Went home Saturday by Wallkill Valley and remained until Tuesday morning. It rained very hard all day Sunday but on Monday Gertrude and I took a ride. Came down on Tuesday by Wallkill road. Found a note here from Booth saying he expected to be in New York on Monday. Yesterday was the annual meeting of the Academy. I attended rather against my will. I was strongly urged for the Vice Presidency and would undoubtedly have been elected if I would have consented but I positively declined. The meeting was harmonious. Only two Academicians were elected, Swayne Gifford and H. W. Robbins, and three associates Porter of Boston, O Donovan and Shirlaw. The dinner was excellent. Old Mr. Chapman attended the dinner. I had a headache all day but I staid until the dinner was over nearly 11 o'clock. My head ached all night and about two oclock with great violence so that I slept a very little only and feel badly today. I have painted a little however. Eastman called and also Weir. Received a letter from Gertrude telling me that Alice has a little daughter and that the mother had had a hard time. Booth came in the afternoon and I had a nice sympathetic chat with him. In the evening I went up and called on them in their new house.
