I went with Mrs. Sawyer to Hudson yesterday on her way home. We breakfasted at the Giffords where we met them all including Sanford and his wife who go to town this week. After putting Mrs. Sawyer on the train I got a horse & phacton and Mary and I drove down to Churchs where we staid two or three hours. They were very glad to have me come and I had a most satisfactory visit with them. Mrs. Church was not at all well but they were both very tender and sympathetic and talked freely with me of Gertrude. Mr. Yeisley was there calling with his father and mother and I was glad to meet him again. We drove back to Hudson and I came home with the 5 o'clock train. I had a very comforting talk with Mary who loved Gertrude as a sister. In the evening I had a letter from Charley Sykes one of Gertrudes old Clinton friends and another one from Mrs. Platt. Today I have been very busy getting the parlor ready for winter and putting down the carpet which Gertrude and I used to always do together. Her hand seemed on every thing I touched for every thing there is of her arranging. I received a most sweet and sisterly letter from Alice. Calvert came with the 6 o'clock train from N.Y. We put the double windows on today. First frost last night.
