Jervis McEntee Diaries

Monday November 17, 1879

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Monday, November 17, 1879, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Painted on the sketch of Mary today. This evening Mary, Sara and I went over to the cemetery and Sara put some dry Autumn flowers and plants on Gertrudes grave. I do not get at all accustomed to the strangeness of doing these things for Gertrude. It seems like something unreal to me. We covered the violets Lucy gave to me, with the dead leaves and then we went for a walk around the cemetery towards Kingston and home through O'Reillys field. I had a letter from Pell today and one from Mrs. Weir. She tells me Lily is still at home not having been able to go back to college on account of her eyes.
