Tuesday September 2, 1879

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Tuesday, September 2, 1879, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

To Boston alone by 11 a.m. train. Very hot and dusty. Left Boston in 7 p.m. train sleeping car for Bangor. Church and his wife came on board at Portsmouth and introduced me to Mr. & Mrs. Leycester, charming English people who are to be of our party. A very pretty attractive girl came into the sleeping car with a lady and gentleman friend and went all the way to Mattewamkeag. Reminded me of Gertrude as a girl in her frankness of manner and she looked a little like her. About same size & same complexion. Tried to find an excuse to speak to her but did not succeed to my regret. At Bangor went to Bangor House to breakfast. Excursion train and late at Matte. [?] at Matte. and left our trunks & completed outfit. Went to Medway & slept Wednesday night.
