Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, June 1, 1881, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Wednesday, June 1, 1881 John McEntee came for me with his team to drive up to the new "Hotel Katterskill" building on South Mountain having some business there. We left about 7 1/2 o'clk drove up through Saugerties, Quarryville to Palenville where we fed the horses. It was a most lovely day with a light breeze from the North and the drive was most charming and exhilarating. We drive up through the Clove to Schutts arriving there about 1.30. Van-de-water was there and every one was very polite and attentive to us. After dinner we walked up to the new hotel stopping to see old Mrs. Scribner and "Liney" or little Annie as we used to call her. Old Mrs. Scribner looked just as she did when I first knew her and it seemed to me had on the same frontispiece and black cap. She didnt know me at first because I had grown stout she said. They have sold their place for $6000. It only cost them $300 she said, but can stay there as long as they want to. Have bought a farm under the mountain. Annie was up stairs wrestling with a mop or some other damp operation, but I called to her to come down to see an old quiet heart who once loved to hold her in his arms and who loved her very much. She was shy and modest but as pretty as one of Hamons pictures even with her poor dress and frowzy curly hair and her arms and hands red with hard work. The road goes up through Scribners upper field and turns north to the hotel about a mile nearly east from Scribners. It is an immense affair but no where near finished. It stands in a place we did not much frequent as it was covered with a tangled low growth. The new road from Palenville up to the house was to be opened for travel tomorrow. We returned by the Sunset Rock path to the Fairy Spring and so around by the path above Druid rocks until we struck the iron pipe by which water is to be forced to the hotel, which we followed down to the brook at the upper end of Scribners first field where they are building a reservoir and a large laundry right in the track where Sanford, Whittredge and I used to go sketch along the stream.
