Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Saturday, October 29, 1881, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Saturday Oct. 29- We were up long before daylight making our preparations for a start and got away before 8 o’clock. It was a fine still morning but cold. Just below our camp we met Mr. Weymouth coming up the lake on a great raft loaded with stores, men and six horses…We had a most successful run to the carry where we got a team and got over about 4 o’clock. Found a lot of letters there, three from home, all well and happy. One of them contained a telegram from Chicago telling me my picture “Autumn Woods” was sold for $1000, which is very satisfactory.
