Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, December 8, 1882, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Friday, Dec 8, 1882 Bitterly cold weather. I awoke too late to go over to breakfast and had it in my room. Commenced a picture but I feel depressed and somewhat discouraged which I know I will not when I get fairly to work. My mind seems full of things I want to paint which evade me when I get at work. Sometimes it seems as though my day is passed and different things are demanded from what I do. If I can only get at work on an interesting subject I will be contented. I went to an afternoon tea at Mrs. Robt de Forests and after dinner as Marion had some young people Calvert and I went to the Union Square Theatre to see the "Ranythans" one of the "tearing" plays they always have there. Afterwards we went to the club for a short time.
