Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, February 2, 1882, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Thursday, Feb 2, 1882 Attended Dr. Bellows funeral at his church at 9 oclock as his remains are to be taken to Walpole N.H. The church was crowded with his friends and Mr. Colyer and Edward Everett Hale conducted the services which were very simple, Mr Hale speaking happily of his honorable and useful life. I cannot help feeling his loss almost as a personal bereavement. Came to my room and have painted all day on my Nevada picture. Julia Dillon and Mrs. Bensly called. A letter from Major Wilkinson telling me of improvement in Mrs. Giffords condition. Attended a trustees meeting at the Century in which we considered the idea of the removal of the club up town. All our plans are based upon a reservation not to increase the membership, not to accept donations and not to build an extravagant club house which will run us into debt.
