Sunday, Jan 15, 1882 Calvert and I after breakfast came over to the 8th St station on the elevated R.R. and took the cars for 125th St where we got off and walked up to the High bridge. It was a pleasant day and we enjoyed it. Got back to dinner at 2. After dinner came over to my room and braided on the birch bark. Weir came in but seemed ill at ease and staid only a few minutes. I am afraid our friendship is cooling but I hope only temporarily. I think he is all wrong in his later art views and feel that we are antagonistic which makes an embarassment between us. He is abstracted and I think not much interested in what I have to say. I am sorry and hope it will wear away, but such estrangements are dangerous to friendships. Downing came in. We worked together awhile then went to the Century and got some supper and came back and worked until 11 oclock. Pinchot invited me to tea this evening. Mrs. Gifford and Weir were to be there. I did not go as we wanted to work on our braid.
