Sunday, Sept 10, 1882 A sober, shadowy day, cool in the morning and with a feeling of fall in the air. Read a charming letter of Wm. Winters in the Tribune descriptive of a visit to Stoke Pogis church, the sentiment of September pervading it as it has this day. The cook should not leave on such a day as ours has, and upset the household arrangements again. I wrote to Eastman that I had been forced to give up the Maine woods this fall and to Royal Reed also. Wrote to Downing to get me certain stable fittings. Am going at the stable to finish it so that I can get out sketching as soon now as possible. There are indications of a storm. Wrote to Louis Bevier of Marbletown to ask if he would take Vaux and me to board toward the last of the month.
