Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, April 12, 1883, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Thursday, Apr 12, 1883 Went home on Saturday, and remained until today. I found the drain from the house had become clogged and I was obliged to attend to it personally. Had to make a new drain a part of the way, get a new sink and take up a piece of the kitchen floor. A most discouraging and difficult thing to negotiate. I finished it today. My mother is no better and needs constant attention. To add to our embarrassment Mrs. Davis is sick and poor Sara has her hands full. She has too much to do. I could not keep a feeling of great discouragement but strove against it. We have too large a place to look after and I only wish we could sell it and get into smaller quarters. I came away in the rain by the noon train, to attend Fullers dinner at the Union League club. He sent a coupe for Whittredge and me and sent us home in one. There were present Eastman Johnson, Robbins, Warren and Whittredge, Fuller & myself. Had a very cosy pleasant time until nearly 11 oclock when we went into the gallery to look at the pictures. Mine was among them and looked well. Whittredge and I came down together and he came to my room and smoked a pipe. A sad letter from Mary Gifford from Atlantic City where she is with her father and in very poor health. Also a letter from Lucy.
