Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, December 9, 1883, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Sunday, Dec 9, 1883 Arranged my rooms. Calvert and I went to a concert in the New Metropolitan Opera House, which by the way I think a chaste, beautiful design. Heard Valleria, Lablache, Mad. & Mlle. Tubelli (whom I liked much for a rich smooth voice) Caporel, Novara, del Puenti and Martelli who played a beautiful solo on the violin cello. I thought of dear Gertrude who is always associated in my mind with music. Mlle Lablache sang "Coming thro' the Rye" but not half so sweetly as Gertrude used to sing it.
