Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, February 3, 1883, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Saturday, Feb 3, 1883 A frozen rain which made the sidewalks impracticable compelling every one to walk in the streets. My frame for my figure came and that and the October have gone to the club. At noon the sun came out. Went home by 3.30 train. It was raining a little when we arrived. I crossed on the ice in Winters stage and Tom met me at the Mansion House. Just after we started up the hill Toby fell and we had to un-harness him to get him up. The harness was broken a little on the end of one of the shafts but no serious damage done. I found my mother sitting in her wheeled chair and playing checkers with Sara looking much brighter than when I went away and able to hold up her head better. Joe Tomkins was there having gone up by the 11 o'clock train.
