Monday, Jan 15, 1883 Went down to pay the taxes having barely sufficient money. My father had had a note of $78 protested which he gave for coal and I had to provide for that. Drew a note for 3 mos. to my father's order for $300. Bray said he would discount it only my father had a note [?] trucks lying there protested so I had to pay that too and instead of paying about $400 I had to provide for nearly $600. I was in despair but feel better now although I cant bear such management. Came down by the 6.16 train. Cutting ice on the river but they ferry still open. Cold. Mary, Gussie and I had a nice sleigh ride this afternoon. The sleighing is excellent. Went up by Wilbur to see the bridge which they are pushing ahead vigorously, then to Kingston, our on the Flat bush road and home by the river road through the strand.
