Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, May 12, 1883, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Saturday, May 12, 1883 Downing and I went to Rondout by 3.30 train. He was in his usual spirits and pleased with the idea of going to the country to remain. I invited his confidence which he gives me. My mother has known nothing about his going away. Found Mrs. Davis there to my surprise. She evidently has no intention of leaving as we supposed she would and hoped she would.
