Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, May 8, 1883, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Tuesday, May 8, 1883 No tidings. Mary and I walked through all the city parks after I had been to the dentists. Bowyer went to the Battery and to Staten Island. It was very warm and after Mary and I got back to the house I had a fainting attack, from the heat and loss of sleep and anxiety I presume, which however passed off after a while. The doctor was called but I had recovered. I slept in Downings room in case he should return. It was very sad to see his belongings all about me and to be so totally ignorant of his fate. I attended a meeting of the Art Union board of Control at the Century in which routine business was transacted.
