Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, November 20, 1883, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Tuesday, Nov 20, 1883 Commenced to paint my studio and wood house. A beautiful day. Mary seems much better and we wrote Sara and telegraphed her also not to come home. Last night Gussie and I sat and talked of our dear mother and of her active useful life and her trials. I wonder that I can think of her so cheerfully but I have tried not to feel sad and not to grieve for her and I think we can resist sorrow if we try.
