Wednesday April 16- Painted all day on my Batabia Kill picture and have succeeded in getting it into a better condition. Attended a general meeting of the Art Union. There is hostility and criticism among certain cliques even (?) of the new members. J. W. Patterson (?) gave expression to it. I begin to wish I had never had anything to do with it. It is so hard to do anything for the artists in general for as a class they look for some individual profit and have no courage to rake small sacrifices for the general welfare.
