Saturday, Aug 30, 1884 I gathered the Bartlett pears this afternoon down by the wood-house and got about a bushel. Fixed my broken trout rod and gathered and strung the Okra and then dressed as I got very warm. John McEntee came to dinner and he and Sara started for Clermont. Just as they were about to start Joe came. Sara would not see him and they drove off. At half past four I drove down to the post office and from there to the West Shore station to meet Mary Gifford. Just before I got there a tremendously black cloud came up and I thought I was in for a wetting but fortunately I got under a shed just where the rail road crosses Union Avenue and got to the station before the rain came. It rained hard. The mountain train was behind time but Mary came. The shower had mostly passed. Had had her bag checked for Kingston so I had to drive up to the Fair St Station for it. The station man was not there. Saw the satchel but could not get it. Left word at Mistens to send it, drove back to the station and got Mary and came home. It was near 7 oclock. Joe talked to me but I soothed him as well as I could and I think he feels better. A letter from Bowyer and one from Downing.
