Friday, Feb 15, 1884 Called on Lang in his bachelor quarters in Waverly Place. The building is on the site of the house occupied by Dr. Drunning. I remember Lang as a young man. Now he is 70 years old and as completely lost sight of as an artist as if he were dead and buried. It admonished me that my day of obscurity is not very far off. A bright beautiful day is today and most enjoyable after the protracted gloomy weather. I worked on my Winter in the Kaatskills and I think it is finished. It interests me but whether it will any one else remains to be seen. I ordered a frame for it today and intend to send it to the Academy. Edith Cook called. Sara went home today. There is a rumor that Vanderbilt has got possession of the West Shore road. It is denied by his authority in the Post but I am afraid he will get it. Went to the club after dinner and spent the evening. Had a letter from Mrs. Pelton written in a somewhat calmer frame of mind. Also an invitation to a reception to meet Madame Wodjeska on Tuesday at the Clarendon, from Mrs. Kimball, which I have declined. There is no satisfaction to me in meeting distinguished people in a crowd of lion hunters.
