Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, August 8, 1885, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Saturday, Aug 8, 1885 This was the day for Genl. Grants funeral. The weather has been most favorable for this most solemn and most noted event. Our memorial services at Liscomb Opera house were simple but in good taste and every one connected in arranging them has cause for satisfaction. We all went except my father. When we returned we found Cousin Rachel here. Mary and Alice came up by the evening train having seen the funeral cortege.
