Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, January 22, 1886, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Friday, Jan 22, 1886 Another rainy day. My draft for the proceeds of my note came today, to my great relief, for I lay awake last night thinking what I could do if it did not come. I went out in the rain and deposited it. I bought a French Coffee pot to take up home. Have been at work on my picture which is improved, still it lacks something and I do not know what it is. Fuller called to tell me he had just returned from the funeral of his brother who died very suddenly with pneumonia at Binghamton. I am going home tomorrow by the 11 o'clock train to attend John & Nannies dinner. I sent my letter to Detroit today declining their offer. I think artists submit too readily to such haggling and dickering. It is just as well to let them know that they cannot do this with me.
