Friday, Feb 4, 1887 It is cold again. I went to Stewarts old store (Dennings) to look for material for my screen but could find none. The clerk who waited on me recommended me to Johnson & Faulkners adding that the clerks were apt to be very disagreeable there, but I must not mind that. I told him I had already had experience of them. From there I went to Stevens in 23rd St an immense shop, but found nothing, then to Shepard Knopps where I finally bought some raw silk 4 ft. wide for 75 cents pr yd. a dark maroon. The carpenter called to see me and he is to send a man Monday morning. I went up to Dr. Taylors at 3. In the elevated train I met Dr. Smith and I went to Eastman Johnson meeting Mrs. Johnson in the street who invited me to stay to dinner. Went up and spent and hour or more with Eastman in his studio. He told me all about Phils sickness and death. He was with him when he died. Fortunately he has left his wife, who Eastman says is an excellent manager, in comfortable circumstances. Whittredge came in just after dinner and spent the evening. He seemed dejected I thought. We came down together. I found a letter from Mary Gifford. She had received the one I returned. She seems unhappy and lifes changes and losses weigh upon her. I am beginning to have something to do to keep up my courage as I look into the future.
