Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, April 24, 1888, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Tuesday, Apr 24, 1888 I wrote Sara a short note before breakfast and [?] a check for $25. I also sent Henderson my list of seeds. It is as cold as winter. I have painted most of the day on a little picture of the brook in the meadows at Arkville. Three of my frames came from Wilmurt today and they are very tasteful. I am going to pay more attention to frames. To many people they are as important as the pictures in them, if not more so, and I have heretofore not sufficiently recognized that fact. I have been here all winter and have not sold one picture and my picture at the Academy has not even been inquired about. I begin to place no reliance whatever on my profession. Mr. Styles, Calverts friend of the Times and Mr. Parsons came in to Marys this evening and I went around to the club. Dr. Stimson who is on the nominating Committee asked me about certain names at the head of the list and I designated two at least who I thought would be no acquisition to the club.
